If you’re new around here, welcome. My name is Sarah, and I LOVE writing cute poems for kids. As a former kindergarten teacher, I am always looking for ways to help young readers enjoy learning and reading.

Short Dog Poems for Kids

People’s lives are not the same once they own a dog. Over the years dogs seem to form a true friendship and offer wonderful memories. Different people have claimed a dog is the next best thing to human relationships.

This entire section is a collection of dog poems for kids written by me. Any little girl or little boy would love a fun dog rhyme to remind them of a loving puppy sitting on their lap. Younger students will enjoy reading and singing about beloved dogs and puppy love. After writing several of these poems, I then had the great idea to add in a humorous dog poem. Kids love funny things. Any classic poet knows how to capture the readers attention with a little humor. Scroll down; I bet you’ll spot it right away.

Dogs on the Couch

-By Little Learning Corner

Mom, the dogs are on the couch!

I was busy packing my lunch pouch.

I can’t get them down

for a walk around town.

I think they want your seat.

Let’s give them a treat.

Dogs on the Couch was written and illustrated to match our dogs. We have a gooshy white boxer and a fluffy poo-chaun. The poo-chaun is a mix between a Toy Poodle and Bichon Frize breed.

Dogs are My Friends

-By Little Learning Corner

Dogs are my friends,

I love them so.

They come to me when I call,

and they love to play ball.

When I hear them bark,

I know it’s time to go to the park.

Pooper Scooper

-By Little Learning Corner

My dog is a pooper.

Good thing I brought a scooper.

I don’t want to step in poo,

with my brand new shoe.

Let’s keep the grass green,

and the scooper clean.

I’m a Little Doggy

-By Little Learning Corner

I’m a little doggy,

small and black.

I have small white spots,

And a fluffy tail.

and let’s go to the park.

Doggy, Doggy, Where’s Your Bone

Doggy, doggy, where’s your bone?

Somebody stole it from your home.

Who has my bone?

I have your bone!

Puppy Dog, Puppy Dog

Puppy dog, puppy dog,

wag your tail.

Puppy dog, puppy dog,

let out a wail.

Puppy dog, puppy dog,

jump for a bone.

Puppy bone, puppy dog

Run on home.

My Neighbor’s Dog is Purple

-By Jack Prelutsky

My neighbor’s dog is purple.

It’s eyes are large and green.

It’s tail is almost endless,

The longest I have seen.

My neighbors dog is quiet.

It does not bark one bit.

But when my neighbors dog is near,

I feel afraid of it!

My neighbors dog looks nasty.

It has a wicked smile.

Before by neighbor painted it,

It was a crocodile!

My Best Friend

-By Abby Jenkins

Black and white, thick and furry

Fast as the wind.Always in a hurry

Couple of spots.Rub my ears

Always comes when his name he hears

Loves his ball; it’s his favorite thing

What’s most fun for him? Everything!

Great big tongue that licks my face

Has a crate, his very own space

Big brown eyes like moon pies

He’s my friend till the very end!

French Doodles

-By Denise Rogers

If you go to Paris, you must take a scoop

and watch where you step so you won’t step in poop.

There are dogs on the sidewalks, the side streets, and more;

dogs at the bakeshop and grocery store.

There are dogs in the cafes, asleep by the tables,

and happy dogs pictured on grocery labels.

There are dogs in the bookshops, and dogs in the park,

dogs in the daytime, and dogs in the dark;

dogs getting ice cream and eating French bread,

(not like my dog who eats dog food instead.)

So if you go to Paris and like dogs an oodle,

then have a good time, but watch out for the doodle!

Yip-Yip-Woof!

-By Kristen Frederick

Tiny Chihuahua, humongous Great Dane.

The difference between them is really quite plain.

Feisty Chihuahua will yap-yap and yip.

If he doesn’t like you, you may get a nip!

(Video) Toddler Learning Video with Ms Rachel | 2 Year Old Milestones, Speech & Social Skills for Toddlers

Gentle Great Dane has a powerful bite,

But never would nip you. She’s much too polite.

Great Dane finds the carpet.A fine place to nap.

Chihuahua loves curling right up in your lap.

Their owners would have some cause for dismay

If each dog behaved in the opposite way!

My Dog Likes to Disco

-By Ken Nesbitt

My dog likes to discoon TikTok for fun.

He’d rather start dancingthan go for a run.

My dog likes to wiggleand jiggle and jump.

He bobbles his nogginand wriggles his rump.

And when he’s done dancing, this doggy of mine

will pick up his cell phoneand post it online.

He puts up a videoonce every day

so people can watchas he wiggles away.

He started on TikTokfor something to do,

and now he’s on YouTubeand Instagram too.

He’s trending on Twitterand Facebook as well.

I guess that I should havebeen able to tell.

You see when I rescuedmy dog from the pound,

the sign said, “Purebredsocial media hound.”

99 Dogs

-Author Unknown

I saw two people heading off for a walk

with 99 dogs in a pack.

So, I asked them why they had so many dogs,

and they thought for a while and said back,

“We’ve tried having different numbers of dogs:

from a lot to hardly any.

The lesson we’ve learned is 98’s not enough

but 100 dogs is too many.”

My Dog

-By Steve Hanson

My family got a new dog. Its fur is short and white.

I absolutely love him,but something is not right.

His ears are soft and longand flop along the side.

His tail is quite short but also very wide.

He’s positively quiet.He never makes a sound.

He’s got a real cute jumpwhen I put him on the ground.

I’m sure when he grows up he’ll be massively strong.

His favorite food’s carrots he eats them all day long!

Poems About Dogs Passing Away

This section was hard. As I sit here sharing these poems about dogs passing away, I can’t help but think about my senior dogs. Both of them are curled up within 5 feet of me, resting their bodies, and waiting for me to be done working.

Goodness, losing a pet is difficult for both adults and children. If you just experienced a loss, I am deeply sorry. I hope you and your children find comfort in these poems. If you’re interested, I highly suggest reading “The Rainbow Bridge: A Visit to Pet Paradise” to your young kids.

Dogs Go To Heaven

-By Megan Osburn

You’re the best friend I could ever ask for,

The one I can talk to.You listen to everything I have to say;

I’m really going to miss you.

You’re growing old and can’t walk as fast,

But don’t you worry,I won’t forget about our past.

I love the comfort you offer, except when you chewed up my shoe.

But it’s okay; we all make mistakes.

I’m really going to miss you.

We loved to play ball, chasing it down the hill.

You’re the hairiest of them all, but you still get the chills.

It’s almost time to go.Don’t worry about me.

Just do it slow, and forget about all the fleas.

I love you with all my heart. The best friend I’ll ever have.

I’m really going to miss you.

I love you, and that will never change.

Are There Paw Prints In Heaven?

-By Missy Davis

I hear of a place that is made of gold,

a place where we shall never grow old,

but one answer I have not heard at all,

will there be paw prints from my little dog?

He promised us joy right from the start.

I just wonder if she’ll be a part.

So as I sit here and dream of the day,

I wonder if in heaven she will stay?

When you’re walking down with the saints of old,

take a glimpse of that new road,

and if there you shall see,

maybe a paw print just for me.
