There’s a big reason anime has been becoming more famous over the years. Is it the artstyle? The themes? The stories? The references to different cultures?
No. It’s the EPIC superpowers.
People can say what they want, but if it wasn’t for the epic powers in anime that get flashed around with every episode, in serious fights or in the tension of characters fighting over the last piece of food…. It wouldn’t be the same.

It wouldn’t give you the same sweet feeling of awesomeness. There’s no saying anime is all about fantasy, but the way they add so much visually to their fiction is impressive and gives you a POWERFUL energy rush that almost turns you into a Super Saiyan too. That is a key reason for anime being as popular as it is today.

The story of this anime revolves around 7 sins, powerful beings who were defeated by the Holy Knights a long time ago and are now a legend. You want a reason to watch this anime? Ban. If that’s not convincing and you need more reasons, here’s another one: Escanor. The fights are sick, with great animation for the first 2 seasons and a quality drop in the 3rd and 4th seasons, which is why the animation gets a 5. With the power system being portrayed subtly, it’s creative, even though there isn’t a specific formula or type to it.

A story about 2 chad beasts with a chad beast rivalry. It’s the main focus in the show, everything revolves around those 2. Low score for simplicity, but if you like that, don’t miss out. The fights between them get better and more intriguing each time, as they always push each-other past their limits.

Old yet vibrant animation with a very nice aesthetic. The abilities are Alters, which can manipulate matter around them and give the user many power-ups through doing that. Cannon arm? Yes. Jojo stand? Yes. Melon? Yes.

Written by the same author of Fire Force, Soul Eater is about Maka and Soul, a wielder and a weapon, trying to get on top of their rank. There’s a very vibrant yet gloomy aesthetic, which makes it a nice visual experience.

The fights are extremely fun to watch because of the characters and how well their style matches their personality. The idea of the weapons being humans that can turn into weapons makes for a lot of weapon-master dynamic that you don’t see in other shows.

MHA has a decent story, a lot of it is training arcs and a lot is about fighting villains and moral dilemmas(we do indeed be living in a society). The fights are good, always emotional.

You can feel a character’s drive as they try to win. The animation is smooth. The fights can get especially flashy, while the rest is generally good-looking. Quirks are a good concept except there’s a lot of plot holes surrounding them and how random they are, though they’re still interesting. If you’re born with a quirk, you’re stuck with it, and that could be a great or a horrible thing.

It’s classic, with a very “new villain appeared so let’s beat them” story. Simple and straight-forward. If most of the fights didn’t depend on Goku, it’d get a higher score, but they’re still amazing to watch. Long, epic and thrilling is the best way to describe DBZ fights. Even earlier in the series, it was way ahead of its time. Dragon Ball is always pleasant to look at, with its raw effects, style and flashiness.

Once again an anime with unique yet vast powers, never seen anywhere else. The only issue is most of them are wasted potential as only a few techniques stay relevant and are paid attention to.

A pretty enjoyable, fun yet dark shonen that’s about a secret agency that fights crime. The members have a strong sense of mission and a respectable level of loyalty that goes beyond the generic power of friendship trope.

There are a lot of high-level detective deductions and plans, as well as actual action-packed fights that never disappoint. Sick animation along with powers that range from enhanced deduction, to turning into a tiger, to literally becoming stronger the richer you get. Also, there’s the mafia.

A family friendly, as well as the only sports anime on this list. It’s about soccer, with pretty fun action scenes and nice animation and characters making up the team(Axel, Shawn, Xavier being some of the best). The best part about this anime is the powers, as this is a Superpowers anime list, it’s perfect for the topic. They use literal magic while playing soccer and it’s very fun to see new characters always popping up with different techniques and skills.

The story of this anime isn’t its main focus though, it has historical references and multiple militaries/sides fighting each-other. The fights are the best part of it, for a single reason:Hype.

They’re over the top and flashy as hell, if you like thrill packed action, this anime is perfect for you.

There’s good animation that goes well with the fights and a variety of characters with unique abilities. Zoro is cool for wielding 3 swords, but wait until you see Date fighting with 6 katanas…. Unique anime that you won’t see a lot, use this suggestion as a chance to not miss out.

It’s an anime about firefighters, who can use fire powers. The story is about saving the world from a fire apocalypse. There are quirky characters with wacky and fun designs, as well as top-tier fights that really stand out due to how much each character can do with their wielding of fire, a lot of creativity behind the fights.

Amazing animation also, that can be cute or extremely detailed and colorful when it has to. Three different generations of fire users make up the character set, all of which are somehow very interesting despite using varieties of the same element.

Demon Slayer starts as exactly what it sounds like; a guy slaying demons. The best aspects of this show are the fights and animation quality which make for a very enjoyable action experience all throughout.

It’s considered the best anime of 2019. A fan favorite and a massive trend among the new stuff. This show also revolves around the individuals more than a set power system, as character abilities have pretty much no boundaries.

Fairy Tail’s only big flaw is that there’s not a lot of deaths. That, however, doesn’t stop all the characters from having very human stories that you can really connect with. There’s a lot of character development and an amazing villain that gives the conflict a solid reason to happen.

The fights are something else, emotionally. Their impact is like no other anime, plus they’re visually great. Animation never lacks and is always nice to look at. Magic is its power system, which leaves room for a lot of different styles, even if characters use similar types. The variety is impressive, if you like superpowers, it deserves a watch.

One Punch Man starts as a comedy about a guy who worked out until his literal hair fell off, and became an overpowered hero to kill time. It slowly introduces more characters with their own motives and stories, even though Saitama is the strongest and it’s comedic, it gets a lot more depth as it goes on.

The animation is better in the first season than the second. There isn’t a specific power system, but everyone does their own stuff which sets them apart pretty nicely and leaves a lot of room for expectation.

The Naruto story is about him becoming the leader of his village. It’s very clever writing in the original show, but in Shippuden there’s a lot of wasted episodes, fillers and characters. It’s not a bad story by any means, however. Its story is still very expansive and iconic. Naruto fights are also epic, impactful and cool with their fictional ninja theme.

It deserves a shout-out for always having had good animation. It starts good, and only gets better, plus the art-style and character designs are on par with Bleach yet different. Superpowers are incredibly innovative. There’s eye powers, cloning, hand-signs and a lot of techniques that are unforgettable and irreplaceable.

The story is about sorcerers fighting against each other for the Holy Grail, an item that can grant any wish. This item also enables the most fun part about the show, summoning people of legends, be it from the past or future, to aid the sorcerers and have a chance at having THEIR OWN wish granted as well. Animation is godly, with heaven’s feel having the best animation to date. Can’t tell you much of the story because anything is a spoiler with this series, and watching all 3 routes and seeing the story come together is the best feeling an anime will give you in years.

Mob Psycho is an anime about a shy boy, Mob, who ends up getting psychic powers, and fears becoming a complete outcast until the opposite happens and he starts making more friends. The fights are highly praised by the anime community as high quality, and that’s for a good reason. Mobs’ power needs controlling and is unpredictable.

The animation is godly, especially in fights. The psychic powers are interesting because the writer had to have used some psychic ability to come up with them. Telekinesis, barrier layer creation, scamming people until it works(Reigen), light distortion and many cool abilities related to physics and the supernatural world.

God of Highschool is a surprisingly good anime. It starts off as a fighting tournament but turns into a battle of gods and demons full of mythological references and figures. The fights are one of the anime’s strongest points and they happen very frequently. They’re perfectly animated, with a high amount of effort and to top it off the use of Charyeok as a power system makes it a great fantasy show with powers borrowed by literal gods.

Hunter X Hunter has one of the best written Shonen stories. The anime community agrees that the writing and storytelling are on another level. Hunter x Hunter has very thrilling fights that will make you feel all kinds of ways. They’re smarts based, not as much about raw power as they are about using powers properly. Pretty decent visually.

The artstyle’s good, the fights have smooth animation and it never lacks. Nen is a top tier power for another reason than Naruto/Bleach, its power system is extremely balanced and formed in a way that leaves room for infinite possibilities while staying reasonable. One of the best in terms of power scaling.

An anime about a Humans vs Gods tournament, and let me tell you it’s godly. The stories of each character and their designs have an incredible amount of depth to them, and so do the fights. They have a few animation flops in the anime as opposed to the manga, but definitely worth watching and reading. The powers are the same as in mythology for the gods, and an enhanced version of real historical figures’ geniuses for humans.

A very interesting show that revolves around alchemy, about 2 brothers trying to restore their lost body parts. Filled with very deep dilemmas and characters, ideologies and conflicts that will get you not only feeling, but thinking too. Decent animation with a unique art-style, and abilities that can be many different things- regular gun wielding, alchemy of different kinds and elements, as well as sins. Argued by the community to be one of the best anime of all time.

Amazing execution and story writing. The goal is pretty generic, be Number 1, but the way of getting to the goal has so much good/unique storytelling and attention to plot points that makes it better written than most classics. Also, fast-paced and little-to-no fillers. Black Clover nails what every other shonen fails at, team fighting.

The fights are mostly brain-based and all the characters are included in some way with no exception and used to their fullest potential. Another anime where the animation quality is a gradual increase. The originality isn’t its greatest strength, but the executions are better than in any old Shonen. Characters and abilities are always evolving and in ways that make sense.

One Piece has an amazing story that will last you a long time if you get into the show. It’s about pirates looking for treasure, as simple as it gets, but there’s a massive cast of characters that all have and create their own stories within the 900+ episodes as of the writing of this article.

Fights play out in a way that gets more and more intense, until one of the characters becomes even MORE intense than the circumstances they’re in.

It’s beautiful to see, there’s impressive comebacks and twists in every fight starting from the very first couple of episodes. Unique artstyle, animation starts off as old but gets good. Vast amount of powers that never get repetitive even with the length of this anime. If you have time, try it.

The Bleach story is enjoyable from start to finish. It starts off with Ichigo going to save his friend Rukia because she got involved with humans during her job, which put her in death penalty. While he’s doing that, one of the Captains there betrays his people and turns out to be a master villain. Little do we know, there’s always plot twists happening in this anime and a lot of events are connected in ways you wouldn’t expect. Bleach fights are amazing.

Aesthetically, the characters in them, the motives, the style, the progression, if you like a fighting anime you HAVE to watch Bleach. Yet another show with ever-improving animation. Clean art-style and unmatched designs.

Arguably the most unique powers in anime history.

There are multiple systems; Shinigami, Quincy, Hollow, Fullbringer and all of them are filled to the brim with absolutely amazing abilities that make it hard to pick favorites

Jujutsu Kaisen revolves around Yuji Itadori, who’s basically cursed with a demon inside of him and his goal is to find the demon’s body parts and exorcise himself. There’s a lot of characters with designs that are iconic, even though the anime is new. There are also a lot of fluidly animated and greatly planned out fights with a dark aesthetic that puts it above most of its fellow shonen. Its sorcerers have very new and innovative powers that give a lot of promise for the future seasons.

There’s great animation through every season, which gets especially good and fluid during fights. The ability to turn into titans is unique, not only in concept, but also in execution as its fights have a mix of rawness and strategy that you won’t see anywhere else.

8 different parts, 9th coming, all of them amazingly written, unique separate stories but yet connected to each-other. The smartest fights you’ll ever see. All about reading, strategy and quick-thinking. Creative, yet they make more sense than any other anime’s fights.

JoJo Artstyle can look unusual at first, to new fans especially, but you’ll get used to it right away.

The amazing detail, style and vibrance in the JoJo art makes it immaculate for anyone who decides to start the show. JoJo’s main power is Stands, which are abilities unique to the user’s personality. You’ll quickly see the never-ending ways that they’re executed. Never predictable, always interesting and clever. Cool designs too. Also, memes.

If there’s an anime on this list you need to watch if you haven’t, this is the first. According to this article and many people, it’s the best of all time.

Godly plot with realistic messages and conflicts, yet over the top and extremely flashy and enjoyable execution that really adds a nice contrast to the fictionality of it being anime and the realisticness of its themes. Fights that will make you cry, laugh and give birth at the exact same time that only get more and more exciting, impactful and powerful through each of the 27 episodes.

VIBRANT animation with an amount of colors and aesthetic appeal never found anywhere else, and uniquely designed characters. The superpower is basically willpower turned into energy, which gives it a real emphasis on what a strong determination can do in someone’s life, even though in the show it’s portrayed extremely exaggerated it keeps the point very clear and true.

A lot of moral dilemmas and surprising plot twists that will also give it a real feeling, not only to the story and message but also the characters in it, making them your biggest role models as well as relatable.

Conclusion

25+ Best Super Power Anime of All Time (28)
